Cleopatras Emeralds

print
Long before the discovery of the new world and the spectacular green fire that would be discovered in the mines of Colombia, other mines existed far away in the ancient Egypt. While rarely producing the level of quality of their Colombian counterpart, beautiful green crystals from here managed to capture the fancy of one of Egypt's most famous rulers, Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt.

Certainly these uncut crystals would hardly be considered impressive by today's standards, but are regardless worthy of note, but mostly because many of them were not in fact emeralds; rather, a emerald look-a-like called a Zeberget peridot, named from island from where they are found and possess a color very similar to the variety of emeralds mined in Egypt at the time.
