Girdle

print
The outer most ring, edge, or border of a faceted gemstone makes up what is called its 'Girdle'. Above the girdle is the table and crown. Below the girdle is the pavilion and culet. When a stone is set into a mounting, usually the prongs will secure the stone at the girdle.

Faults in cutting often manifest themselves at the girdle. For example, a girdle cut too think may make the stone appear smaller and with less sparkle. On the other hand, a girdle cut too thin may be brittle and fracture easily, potentially causing the stone to become unset, when placed in a mounting.
