Hooker Emerald

print
Along with many other emeralds, this 75.47-carat emerald cut jewel is part of the National Gem Collection, a part of the Smithsonian Institution. It is set in a brooch amongst many smaller round brilliant cut diamonds.

The stone is particularly notable due to its remarkably small number of inclusions, considering its great size; virtually unheard of in Colombian emeralds.

The stone was originally part of a belt owned by one of the last sultans of the Ottoman Empire (Modern day Turkey), but was eventually purchased and reset in it's present form.

The stone was donated to the Smithsonian by James Stewart Hooker.
