The term 'matrix' is used to describe the fine-grained mass igneous rock into which a crystal such as diamond or emerald is embedded. Individual matrices may be one of a variety of compositions, depending on its origin. For example, emeralds from Russia tend to be found in matrices of phlogopite (mica), plagioclase (feldspar), and talc, while emeralds from Colombia are more often found in veins of albite, pyrite, and calcite.
