Gachala Emerald

Gachala EmeraldAmong the many famous emeralds mined from Colombia is the 858-carat Gachala Emerald, a uncut emerald crystal about 5 centimenters in diameter.

The Gachala Emerald is currenty on display at the National Gem Collection, a part of the Smithsonian Institution. The emerald was donated by renound New York jeweler Harry Winston.

The Gachala Emerald was found in 1967 at Vega de San Juan mine in Colombia and derives its name from a nearby mining village.
