Emerald Cut

The Emerald Cut is one of several styles of cutting found on emeralds, and often the most popular. It consists generally of a large square or rectangular girdle with chamfered corners and stepped facets along the crown. It differs considerably from older step cuts in that the normally flat pavilion is replaced with a series or reflective facets cut at ever increasing angles designed to enhance color and make maximum use of rough material. This is an important consideration as a significant portion of the rough material is lost in the cutting process; in some cases up to thirty percent.

Besides providing a large Table that better displays the stones garden, this cut also serves a more practical purpose; assisting in the protection against chipping.

An interesting note of this cut is that, even when used with other gemstones such as diamonds or sapphires, it still referred to as an 'emerald cut'.

Other cuts include Round Cut, Trilliant?, Pear?, Marquise?, Oval?, Radiant?, Fancy, Baguette? and the Cabochon.
